Subject matter II; Ali and wife

The exposure of Ali’s belly as a marker of care, his wife’s orchestration of that sign—these are choices that belong entirely to them, yet the work frames them as subjects of artistic inquiry rather than collaborators shaping what gets seen. What bothers me is how the video’s temporal arc (the artists’ discomfort becoming legible) risks turning their composure into a silent rebuke, a kind of passive nobility that’s equally extractive. Why did you film duration rather than ask what Ali and his wife wanted visible, and does the work’s self-awareness about the Western gaze actually complicate that extraction or just aestheticize it?
