The flatness of the diptych is doing the real work here—same wall texture, same formal clothing, same mild, composed expression repeated but never quite identical, which makes the sameness feel uncanny rather than reassuring. The artist context frames this as wish fulfillment, but what I’m reading in the actual image is something closer to the claustrophobia of comparison, the way doubling someone exposes the impossibility of ever truly inhabiting another person’s position, no matter how much you might want to.
