The freeze can serve as a useful survival mechanism in certain situations to try to manage and overcome fear in order to take action and protect oneself in dangerous situations.

The freeze here is the most honest thing in the frame — the man’s body knows what the camera doesn’t, that this moment was never about him, and his stillness is both capitulation and refusal, a way of saying *I will not perform your presence into meaning*.
